Red isn’t a color I paint with a lot but every time I do I wonder why I don’t use it more! This particular red dresser is painted in Cranberry Sauce and glazed with Graphite glaze to bring out the details.
Here are all the details so you can copy this look on your own piece of furniture!
Prep & Prime
Since the top of this dresser was laminate I used high grit sandpaper on my orbital sander to rough up the surface and make sure that my paint would adhere. The rest of the dresser I sanded lightly with 180 grit sandpaper. Following the sanding I did some heavy duty cleaning. Use warm water and a TSP solution and scrub well to clean. Follow this with just a solution of warm water to rinse away any TSP residue.
Once the dresser was completely dry I used my favorite Country Chic Paint Clear Primer.
I love this product- especially if I know I will be distressing a piece. Typical primers are colored (white, grey etc) so when distressing you see that color. This clear primer totally eliminates that problem.
Paint, Seal & Glaze
After the primer was dry I painted the dresser in Cranberry Sauce. It is the most gorgeous, sophisticated deep red color!
I didn’t distress this piece but I wanted to add some dimension still. Graphite glaze works perfectly for this purpose. I prefer to seal my pieces first before I glaze.
By sealing your piece first the glaze doesn’t change the actual paint color and gives you more freedom to wipe away. Simply use a foam brush to apply generously and then wipe away the excess. Make sure you work in sections to avoid drying before you can wipe away.
Lastly, I updated the hardware to match the graphite glaze. Simply clean your hardware well and then use spray primer on the surfaces. Once the primer was completely dry I sprayed all surfaces with my favorite hammered finish in black.
That’s it! If you paint something with Cranberry Sauce make sure you tag me so I can see!
